Utah Landscape Winter Photography

Photography is a popular hobby for locals in Utah County, and it’s no surprise why. Blessed with breathtaking natural beauty, Utah Valley entices everyone to grab their cameras and capture our local landscapes. If you’re seeking winter photo spots, here are some of my favorite locations. Whether you’re an amateur capturing nature with your phone or a pro seeking inspiration, these spots offer incredible backdrops for your shots.

Keep in mind that winter may limit access to these places due to heavy snow or weather conditions. It’s wise to check the weather before venturing out. Some destinations require hiking, so be prepared for navigating snowy or muddy terrain throughout the day.

Sundance Mountain Resort

Sundance Mountain Resort offers picturesque landscapes that photographers have admired for many years. Nestled in the Wasatch Mountain Range and the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, you’re sure to snap some incredible nature pictures. The resort is conveniently reached via Provo Canyon by turning onto the SR-92. Keep in mind that you need permission and may have to pay fees for commercial photography. Drones are not allowed on the property.

Tibble Fork Reservoir

Tibble Fork Reservoir is a well-liked spot for summertime fun and offers a great backdrop for capturing beautiful winter scenery. The reservoir shines in blue and green hues, nestled among pine-covered mountains. Access to Tibble Fork can be a bit trickier in winter as parts of SR-92 are closed, so taking Timpanogos Highway from the north is your best bet. Usually, there’s a $6 entry fee for American Fork Canyon, and if you’re into commercial photography, you might need a permit. For info on commercial photography rules, reach out to the local Forest Service Ranger District.

Provo Canyon

Provo Canyon links the Provo Metro area to the Wasatch Back and is known as one of the most beautiful scenic routes in Northern Utah. Community parks and pullouts along the road offer parking for those looking for longer stops. Besides popular spots like Bridal Veil Falls and the Provo River, there are stunning mountain formations and wooded paths that spark creativity and imagination.

Payson Canyon

Payson Canyon is where the Nebo Loop Scenic Byway begins. For stunning mountain views with fewer crowds compared to the northern canyons, visit Payson Canyon for your landscape photography. Although parts of the Nebo Loop close in winter, there are photo spots north of the ski lot near the Grotto Trailhead. Since many campgrounds shut down, roadside pull-outs are the best places to park.

Utah Lake

Utah Lake provides unique photo opportunities. During winter, the water freezes, and winds stack ice floes along the shore. Surrounded by mountains, wetlands, and cattails, a visit to the lake will enrich your portfolio with lovely images. Capture stunning sunsets over the lake during the golden hour.
